For over two decades, we've been bridging the gap between development ambitions and ecological preservation—proving that thoughtful planning benefits everyone.
Sparkling Node began in 2003 when Dr. Eleanor Marsh, fresh from completing her doctorate in conservation biology at the University of Bristol, recognised a troubling pattern. Developers viewed environmental regulations as obstacles. Conservationists saw industry as the enemy. Both sides talked past each other, and ecosystems suffered from poorly designed compromises.
Starting from a cramped office above a greengrocer in Clifton, Eleanor assembled a small team of ecologists who shared her conviction: rigorous science communicated clearly could transform adversarial relationships into productive partnerships. That first year, they completed seven projects. Word spread.
By 2010, the team had grown to fifteen specialists covering everything from bat surveys to wetland hydrology. We'd earned a reputation for reports that planning committees actually trusted—not because we told clients what they wanted to hear, but because our assessments held up under scrutiny.
The 2021 Environment Act changed everything. Mandatory biodiversity net gain transformed ecological consulting from a niche service into an essential component of any significant development. We'd spent years preparing for exactly this moment, developing methodologies and building relationships that positioned us to help clients navigate the new requirements efficiently.
Today, 34 ecologists, environmental scientists, and support staff work across three offices in Bristol, Manchester, and Edinburgh. We've retained the collaborative culture that defined our early years while building capabilities that match the complexity of modern environmental challenges.
Our founder remains actively involved, though she's handed operational leadership to a new generation. The questions we tackle have evolved—climate adaptation, ecosystem services valuation, nature-based solutions—but the core approach hasn't changed. Listen carefully. Gather evidence. Explain findings honestly. Find solutions that work.
Principles that shape every project we undertake.
We follow evidence wherever it leads. When findings don't support a client's preferred outcome, we say so directly and help identify alternatives.
Your project's success matters to us. We invest time understanding your constraints and goals, then work within them without compromising ecological outcomes.
Ecological concepts can be complex. We translate technical findings into clear language that supports informed decision-making at every level.
Theoretical perfection that can't be implemented helps no one. Our recommendations balance ecological ideals with real-world feasibility and budgets.
Experienced professionals guiding our strategic direction and technical standards.
All senior ecologists hold Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) status through the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management. Our surveys meet Natural England licensing standards, and our BNG calculations are certified under the DEFRA metric framework.
We maintain professional indemnity insurance covering projects up to £5 million and carry full public liability coverage for all fieldwork activities.
Whether you need ecological expertise for an upcoming project or want to explore career opportunities, we'd welcome the conversation.
